HUMMELSTOWN BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION
We are approximately 100 dynamic
business owners and professionals who believe in the mission of HBPA:
“To promote and
advance the commercial,
industrial, civic and general interest of the Hummelstown area.”
Although difficult to realize from
time to time, we need each other. Every Hummelstown business and
professional benefits
immeasurably from one another
and from incoming new businesses. Our community is enhanced by its
strong and
vibrant business and professional base. Likewise, losing
businesses hurts all of us. No business is an island. In our current,
highly
competitive business environment and present economic climate, we need
to work together to survive, prosper and grow.
As we all know, there is strength in numbers.
We seek to accomplish the goals of
our mission statement through our many special community events and
projects. These are
designed to bring families into Hummelstown, build goodwill between businesses and
residents, support our local charities
and provide opportunities for our businesses to gain exposure, which in the long run will hopefully increase
their customer base.
HBPA Projects and Community
Involvement
Pets
on the Square. We were more than pleased with the hundreds in
attendance on the Square and the number of animals entered.
Our
businesses had the opportunity to be event & category sponsors or have a
coupon on the programs passed out. This event
brought us lots of
newspaper
coverage and three local shelters received monetary & pet food
donations.
A Taste of Hummelstown on the Square. Our businesses lined
the sidewalks of Center Square serving appetizers, entrees, drinks
or
desserts to over 300. We were overwhelmed with the response and
able to raise almost $6000 that was donated to the
Hummelstown Food Bank,
Hummelstown Fire Co. and the Hummelstown Library’s Building Fund. Again
we received TV and
newspaper coverage.
Scarecrows
on the Square. 20 businesses seized the opportunity to
display a scarecrow on Main Street with signage
advertising their
business. Press releases, TV coverage, posters, and flyers helped to bring hundreds
of out-of-towners in to walk
Main Street and vote for their favorites.
Hummelstown Holiday Happenings
2007. The crowd was down this year due to impending bad weather
but Trolley West and
Trolley East carted
families to participating businesses and “Happenings” around town: pony
rides, Santa on the Square, gingerbread
cookie decorating, the Childrens Christmas Shop, costumed characters,
ornament making, and lots more. Many businesses not
holding an Open House have generously contributed
toward the cost of the trolleys and the events being held.
Trees on the Square.
18 businesses participated in decorating a
tree indicative of their business.
Each tree also displays the name, address and phone number of that
business. The trees remain on display from mid-November until
the New Year. The trees certainly add to the atmosphere of the Square.
HBPA presence in the community includes The Kidz Auction during The
Heritage Day Celebration and food booths the Hummelstown
Arts & Craft Festival & the Faulkner Honda Criterium bicycle race.
HBPA
also provided Hummelstown Dollars as prizes for Pets on the Square &
Scarecrows on the Square. This year HBPA gave out
approximately $1000 in Hummelstown dollars. These dollars can be “spent”
only in local businesses. HBPA then
reimburses the businesses.
HBPA
also produces the Hummelstown Business Directory & Map. The third
edition will be debuted January 2008. It has now
become the
official map of the Hummelstown Borough and contains all important
Borough information. The piece was direct
mailed to all in the
17033 and 17036 zip code areas in January 2008. It is also available
at member businesses, AAA, delivered
to surrounding
motels/hotels/campgrounds prior to HBPA events, included in materials
given at several conferences and is included
in packets given to
newly arriving Med students at Hershey Medical Center. Hershey
Entertainment also sends it out in their info packets
as does the Harrisburg/Hershey/Carlisle Welcome Center.
